Sinquefield Cup
White won every decisive game in round two.
Four victories by the first-move advantage created a five-way tie at 1½/2 among Caruana, Aronian, So, Praggnanandhaa, and Vachier-Lagrave [Source: ChessBase]. Aronian's 91-move marathon against Keymer saw him escape a lost position before Keymer blundered Qc4+? instead of the winning Rc1, surrendering the endgame. Praggnanandhaa buried Sindarov in a Queen's Gambit Declined when Sindarov's passive knight on move 82 allowed White's queenside passers to outrun Black's f-pawn.
The next three rounds will sort the serious contenders from the tourists.
Cairns Cup
Two players have yet to drop a game.
Tan Zhongyi and Alice Lee share the lead at 2/2 after dispatching overnight rivals in round two [Source: ChessBase]. Tan broke through Koneru's queenside defenses with 25.b4!, forcing an exchange surrender and decisive pressure. Lee converted a superior rook endgame against Deshmukh through sustained technique and an extra pawn. Defending champion Carissa Yip bounced back from her opening loss by beating Kosteniuk in an ambitious kingside attack.
The road to first place runs through both of them now.
