Thomas Paehtz, one of East Germany's leading chess players, celebrates his 70th birthday today. Born in 1956, Paehtz had a lengthy competitive career, winning the East German Championship twice (1988 and 1990) and achieving the international master title in 1984 before becoming a grandmaster in 1990. He represented East Germany at the 1988 Chess Olympiad as a reserve and later competed extensively in German, Austrian, Belgian, and Luxembourg leagues after reunification, sharing first place in the 1993 German Championship with Thomas Luther. Paehtz passed his chess passion to his daughter Elisabeth, whom he coached to become Germany's first female grandmaster in 2022 and a two-time World Youth Champion.
