Wolters Kluwer absorbs Brightflag, Aderant CEO exits, AI consolidation accelerates

Wolters Kluwer–Brightflag deal
Big law software just got bigger.
Wolters Kluwer is acquiring Brightflag, the AI-powered legal spend and matter management platform founded in 2014, to strengthen its ELM (Enterprise Legal Management) footprint among Fortune 500 legal departments and their counsel [Quelle: Wolters Kluwer]. The deal signals that incumbent vendors are buying AI-first workflows rather than building them—a pattern we saw with Reed Smith and Setfords pivoting to proprietary tools last week. Consolidation is tightening around spend visibility and agentic automation.
Watch what Wolters Kluwer deprecates first from the legacy ELM stack.
Aderant CEO departs amid AI shift
Aderant's chief executive is stepping out.
Chris Cartrett, who became president and CEO of the Roper Technologies–owned practice management vendor in 2021, is leaving effective August 1 to lead emergency-response software company ImageTrend [Quelle: Law.com]. Cartrett oversaw two acquisitions in the past year—HerculesAI's legal tech assets and Virtual Pricing Director—and launched agentic AI tools through Aderant Agent Center while pivoting the vendor's entire operating model to keep pace with law firms' accelerating AI sophistication. Former CEO Deane Price returns as interim leader while Aderant searches for a permanent replacement.
The departure signals burnout at the pace-or-die intersection of legal tech and generative AI.
Capital pours into fewer legal AI companies
Investors are doubling down on fewer bets.
Legal technology funding increased in the first half of 2026 while deal count fell, indicating a deliberate shift toward deploying larger capital checks into companies with proven unit economics and AI traction rather than spreading bets across the field [Quelle: Law360]. This mirrors the consolidation wave—Wolters Kluwer buying Brightflag, Aderant acquiring and integrating AI assets—signaling that winners are already sorting themselves from the pack. Downstream: Series A startups will face raised bar for follow-on funding.
The legal tech market is hardening around capital efficiency and near-term AI monetization.

Aderant President and CEO Chris Cartrett to Step Down ... - Law.com24 hours ago ... Cartrett, who has led Aderant since 2021, is leaving the legal technology industry to become CEO of software and data analytics provider ImageTrend.law.com

Aderant, an Atlanta-based legal business management software provider owned by Roper Technologies, announced that president and CEO Chris Cartrett will depart effective Aug. 1 to become CEO of emergency response software company ImageTrend. Former Aderant CEO Deane Price will return as interim CEO on July 20 while the company searches for a permanent successor. Cartrett, who joined Aderant in 2014 and became president and CEO in 2021, highlighted the company's strong talent base and noted that generative AI has fundamentally reshaped how Aderant operates and develops software, while law firms have become increasingly sophisticated technology customers requiring vendors to move faster. Aderant has made two acquisitions in the past year—purchasing HerculesAI's legal technology assets in August 2025 and Virtual Pricing Director in October 2025—and recently launched agentic AI-powered tools through the Aderant Agent Center and partnered with legal AI provider Harvey.
